Self-Confidence | Career Angles

For years, I have told job hunters that employers look for competence, self-confidence, character, chemistry, maybe, a little charisma, all of which add up to them trusting you to do the job they need to have done.

Once a person is hired, they get sloppy. They may still demonstrate character but, often, the first thing to go is their self-confidence for any number of reasons including discovering the employer has misrepresented the position, the job is harder than they expected . . . There are a million different reasons but the first thing to go is self-confidence.

Thus, when their ideas are ignored or someone else’s are chosen, it feels like a punch in the gut that takes them into a further spiral that makes it hard to feel confident.

Which comes first? The self-confidence or the approval of your manager and peers. Answer. The appearance of self-confidence. Most of your colleagues and peers won’t know the difference between the real thing and the simulation.

Fake it. Once you start doing it, you will find yourself more successful and effective and your peers and manager will believe in you more.
