When companies started thinking about riding through a recession, they started thinking in terms of creating a differentiated product that has real customer value. That translates into they think about what makes them different, what they can offer their customer that’s going to stand out from all the others. Recession-proofing your career should follow a similar guideline, which means you have to understand your market.
If you’re one of 200,000 people in New York who do the same thing. There’s nothing different about you. You’re a commodity; you’re disposable. But if you can think of yourself in terms of what you do that’s different, and can talk about what people hire you to do. And that’s one of the things I coach people about. To be able to say “People hire me to . . . ” and fill in the blank on that sentence.
