Pivotal Moments | Career Angles

In some respects, sports is easier than life and work in that pivotal moments are easier to recognize. It is the bottom of the 9th, Casey comes to the plate, the tying runner in scoring position and The Mighty Casey struck out on 3 pitches.

It’s the 4th quarter of the championship basketball game, the ball is in a sick Michael Jordan’s hands, he’s being defended by an elite defender and in a moment I have seen many times, he makes a sharp move to his right to.  drive to the basket, pulls up and with 5 seconds left and his team losing by 1, hits a short jump shot in the lane that helps his team win yet another championship.

At work and in life, these moments are rare and often barely recognizable. In my own life, going out with my wife to be came about because she decided to call and leave a message while I was away one weekend. She did not return my call . . . twice. On my third call, I sang, “Call me. Don’t be afraid you can call me.” We are soon to be married for 20 years.

My transition to coaching came about because I listened to an inner voice rather than dismiss it In hindsight, so many of these moments have changed my life.

The idea is to pay attention proactively and not with hindsight, learning not to default to, “No,” and defaulting to “Sure,” to opportunities.

I know doing that has changed my life and the lives of so many.
