Ah, the self-criticism! Ah! The impatience weighing heavily on you! Pointless exercises.

I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I coach people and organizations. I help people to be more effective at what they do. You know, this is a reminder for all of you. It's a reminder for me too, but let's start off with my being of service to you.

When the job hunting, when you're hiring, when you're living life, it's very common to be impatient.

"I want the job now."

"I need the job now."

"I must have the job now."

"I need to hire someone now."

"I want that person to change it now."

Does it ever work that way? Course not. Doesn't mean that you don't put in effort. As a matter of fact, you need to put in effort. Effort is the thing that you can control. Effort is the thing that you need to do every day in order to make change. Change doesn't come from wishing and hoping and thinking and praying. Change comes from doing the small things regularly that build on one another so that you get results.

For example, if all you do is sit at home waiting for the phone to ring, that doesn't work in relationships anymore than it does in job search. You need to always be out and about talking to people, connecting with people being available for conversations.

Again, that works in job search as well as in your personal life, right? But the idea is patience and kindness to yourself, because I think one of the things that often happens with folks is the longer they're out of work, and they're not getting results. Not only are they getting impatient, but they're getting hyper critical. Yeah, I say hyper critical because it's all criticism.

"You're a loser!

"You're a failure."

There's nothing concrete in there to change. See, if you make a mistake, or if you do something wrong, it's correctable. If you say, "you're a failure," or "you're a loser," there's nothing there to work with. It is the voice of doom dropped on your head and there's nothing to work with there because you're not either a loser or a failure. What you are is a human being who just doesn't quite know what to do.

It's why I coach but I'm not going to try promoting coaching with you today. I just want to encourage you, stop beating yourself up. Take action daily-- more actions than fewer actions, if possible. But talk to people. Get out. Ask for help. Be kind and patient with yourself. If you do more right things than wrong things, you will find work. You will find that special person. But, you know, again, it all starts off with taking action, not making criticism.
