Pairings | Career Angles | Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

I remember a wonderful meal I had at a restaurant in New York that is since closed will food was served with a wine, paired to complement the dish perfectly. It certainly did. The items combined made each individually stand out more.

Pairings at work bring two people together to accomplish a particular project, task or goal.

Pairings can also help a new hire on board faster than trying to figure out things on their own.

Pairings take some of the individual pressure off each individual person and allow them to be freer to perform at a higher level because “someone has their back.”

Having that support plus extra eyes and ears on what’s being done helps people deliver faster.

In addition, managers and others can receive feedback from each member of the pair about the other– what did they do well, where they struggled, how well they supported their pair partner and more.

As a manager, this information helps you immeasurably.

As a new hire, being paired with someone allows you to transition more smoothly and quickly.

As a staffer, joining forces with someone else can make you stand out even more.

I remember the ceremony I saw commemorating someone’s wedding. The officiant held a candle in each hand and spoke about how each burn brighter when the flames of the candle were combined.

Finding ways to combine candles in your workplace will help everyone.
