Own Your Onlyness and Get Hired Faster

Own Your Onlyness and Get Hired Faster

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Let’s get real: when you’re job hunting, you’re just one of thousands of people saying they’re “passionate,” “driven,” and “results‑oriented.” Sound familiar?

That language blends you in. The people who get hired faster do one thing better than everyone else—they know and show their onlyness.

Onlyness is that mix of experiences, strengths, and perspective that makes you different. It’s not your résumé. It’s your story. And when you communicate that clearly, you stop competing on credentials and start competing on value.

Step 1: Figure Out What Makes You the “Only One Who…”

Ask: “I’m the only one who…” and finish the sentence.

Maybe you’re the only one who built a new process that saved weeks of work. Maybe you turned a failing client into a long‑term success story. Maybe you thrive when things are messy and others fold.

Those examples are your proof. They make your story stand out because they’re real, not recycled.

Step 2: Stop Sounding Generic

Hiring managers and recruiters read endless profiles full of the same language. If your résumé or LinkedIn headline says, “Experienced professional with a proven track record,” you’ve just disappeared into the crowd.

Make your achievements specific. Say:

  • “Helped my company hit its revenue goal by building an entirely new client channel.”

  • “Cut onboarding time by half by reworking training and support.”

Specifics show impact. Fluff doesn’t.

Step 3: Treat LinkedIn Like a Stage, Not a Storage Locker

Most job hunters treat LinkedIn like a static résumé. They polish it once and wait. That’s a mistake. Visibility creates opportunity.

Here’s what works:

  • Post once a week. Share an insight, a lesson, or a problem you solved.

  • Comment on posts from leaders in your field. Add something meaningful—not just “Great post!”

  • When you connect, write a real note: “I liked what you shared about X. It made me think about Y.”

It’s not about going viral; it’s about being visible. People hire who they see, not who they scroll past.

Leveraging AI to Scale Your Onlyness

Step 4: Use LinkedIn as a Research Tool

Search for people already in roles you want. Study how they describe their path. Look at their highlights, their tone, and what their managers praise publicly.

Then send short, professional messages:

“I noticed you moved from operations to product leadership. I’m exploring something similar—what helped you make that transition successfully?”

That’s how real relationships start. Not with “Do you know of any openings?” but with curiosity and respect.

Step 5: Keep Your Story Straight

Everything—résumé, profile, messages, interviews—should tell the same story. Who you are. What you do best. What you want next.

Mixed messages make employers nervous. When you’re consistent, you look confident and credible.

Step 6: Apply Smarter, Not Wider

Here’s the truth: spraying résumés everywhere won’t get you hired faster. It just drains your energy.

When you know your onlyness, you know which jobs align with your strengths. Focus there. Skip the rest. The right fit is where your uniqueness creates the most value—and where you’ll stay longer and perform better.

Step 7: Run Your Search Like a Project

Set weekly goals: conversations, posts, applications, follow‑ups. Track what works. Adjust.

This isn’t guesswork—it’s process. The same mindset that delivers results at work delivers results in your job search.

Your onlyness is what separates you from everyone else playing the same game. The moment you own it—and make it visible—you become someone employers want to find.

Stop trying to look like everyone else. Start sounding like yourself. That’s how people remember your name… and hit “schedule interview.”
