No BS Job Search Advice: Host Your Own Resume

Host Your Own Resume

In the days of old, when newspapers were the medium of choice for job hunters, companies advertised in the local or national publications and the resumes flowed in. You mailed them, faxed them, overnight mailed them, and, in general, did whatever you could to get your resume there first for evaluation.

Today, newspapers are a less important medium for employers and recruiters. Companies have moved their campaigns to the web. Companies and recruiters are all searching for resumes, too, but not just on the big job boards. Many use Google to find free resumes.

Why?

Well, the cost of getting a subscription to LinkedIn can be enormous and for companies with modest budgets or a few jobs to hire per year, it can be as large as a large agency fee. So many companies and recruiters are saving money and using search engines to find resumes.

What this means for you is that to get broader exposure for your resume, you should have a web page with a search engine optimized resume.

This doesn’t require that you register a domain name; you can create a website with Google sites or wix.com for free where you can host your resume and make it available for employers to find it.

Just to be clear, it doesn’t have the same reach that being found on LinkedIn would. The idea is to make it available online freely so that if someone finds it they can contact you.

Regardless of which way you do it, get your resume on to the web and not just on the job boards and get yourself found.
