How to Make the System Give You Interviews

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

We all know that the traditional job search is broken. Most people spend hours tweaking resume fonts, running text through AI tools, and pushing PDFs into online corporate portals. They treat the process like a raffle, hoping more tickets mean a win.

It wasn’t working before AI and it certainly isn’t working well now. Applying online puts you in a low-yield, automated pool. Your background is turned into raw text and evaluated by software designed to eliminate people, not discover them.

If you want a steady stream of interviews, stop being a reactive job hunter. Take on an operator mindset. Build real leverage, skip the public portals, and connect directly with decision-makers.

Here is a strategy to control your pipeline and force a human review.

1. Referral Arbitrage: Bypassing the Front Door

Before you start networking, understand why you are doing it. You aren’t reaching out to pick anyone’s brain. You are executing Referral Arbitrage.

Companies rank inbound resume channels through a hierarchy:

  • Tier 1 (Internal Employee Referrals): Sourced directly through an active employee’s internal portal. The software routes these directly to a recruiter’s manual review dashboard, giving them the highest priority and skipping automated keyword filters entirely.

  • Tier 2 (Direct Recruiter Sourcing): Originates from direct recruiter outreach or manual profile pulls. These carry medium priority and move straight to initial human screening calls.

  • Tier 3 (Public Portal Submissions): Submitted through standard online job boards and corporate career pages. These receive the lowest priority, running through automated keyword screening and mass rejection rules before a human ever sees them.

When an employee submits your resume through an internal system, the software tags your file. In Imany systems, this tag overrides the automated rejection filters. It drops your profile right onto the recruiter’s desk for a manual look.

Remember: companies pay employees real money for referrals, often $1,000 to $5,000+. When you present an employee with a sharp, verified background that fits an open role, you are handing them a financial win.

Your goal is simple: secure that Tier 1 tag before your resume ever touches the database.

2. Networking for Extroverts: The Ecosystem Strategy

If you get energy from talking to people, your edge is speed and scale. But extroverts often fail by being too broad, too social, and unfocused.

To turn social energy into real job interviews, discipline your approach:

Target the Ecosystem

Don’t just reach out to hiring managers. Connect with the service providers around them. Industry consultants, agency directors, vendor reps, and specialized recruiters know which companies are hiring long before a position is posted online.

Use the “Forwardable Asset”

Stop asking people for “coffee chats.” It creates unnecessary friction. Instead, when asking for an introduction, give your contact a Forwardable Asset:

“Hi [Contact], I noticed you’re connected with [Hiring Manager] at [Company]. I’m following their current infrastructure rollout. Having led a similar project at my last firm, I put together a 1-page breakdown on how we avoided deployment delays. Would you be open to forwarding the short note below to them? I wrote it so you can copy and paste it.”

You remove all the work for your contact. You present yourself as a valuable peer instead of someone looking for a handout.

3. Networking for Introverts: Asynchronous Deep Research

If traditional networking makes you cringe, don’t force it. You don’t need to go to mixers, make small talk, or schedule awkward phone calls.

Your edge is deep preparation, independent research, and precise writing. You can get more interviews than an extrovert by running a quiet Asynchronous Strategy.

The Boardroom Diagnostic

Use public data to analyze a company’s real problems. Read their earnings reports, review executive interviews, or look at competitor moves.

Find a specific problem you know how to fix. Send a short, direct message to a peer or manager:

“I’ve been tracking your team’s expansion into mid-market software integration this quarter. Having managed that shift previously, I’ve seen that data sync logic often leaks about 14% in workflow speed by month three if teams aren’t decoupled early. I put together a 1-page framework on how we protected our metrics against that drag. No strings attached—let me know if you want me to send the notes over.”

The Asynchronous Value Exchange

Look at what this does:

  • It needs zero live interaction (no calls or coffee requested).

  • It shows clear proof of work instead of self-promotion.

  • It gives immediate value with no pitch.

When a manager reads this, they see a specialist who understands their problems. They don’t send you to HR. They ask, “When can you talk to our team?”

4. The 80/20 Rule for Applying

To get more interviews, manage your time strictly using the 80/20 Rule:

  • 80% of your time: Direct outreach, creating forwardable assets, writing targeted diagnostics, and securing Tier 1 internal referral tags.

  • 20% of your time: Online portal submissions, only after formatting your resume for clean text parsing and fit.

The Bottom Line

Getting interviews isn’t about luck or beating an algorithm. It’s about positioning.

Stop handing your career over to job boards and databases. Run your job search like an executive campaign: use internal referral incentives, play to your natural communication strengths, and offer real solutions. That is how you bypass the software, skip the line, and take control.
