I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I coach people I want to help people be more effective in the workplace that are hiring better, in their job search, managing, leading . . . the whole gamut of functions related to a career.

Networking. Incredibly important in your career. People have the habit of networking up . . . that is, looking for people more senior than they to help them advance in their career. It makes perfect sense. But people forget the other two directions-- sideways and down. And I say that because, you know, I'm a former search professional and I now coach. And
in coaching people and in search, I kept seeing so many people pass their boss by and their boss is now stuck at a certain level for whatever the reason is but they've passed them by and, now that their boss needs an ally and they haven't maintained the connection.

So, what I'm going to encourage you to do is when you're doing networking be friendly with the people beneath you, not just simply while they work for you but after they leave you for the peers, the people on the sides, I want you to maintain contact with them, too, because you may need their

They may join an organization where it really fits for you and where you
want to get to professionally and if you drop them, you'll never know. Networking is not just when you're looking for work. I want to repeat that networking is not just simply when you're looking for work it's for when you want to assist other people. It's when you want to maintain relationships with people so that, in the future, you can help one another. They get to know you better you get to know them better, you develop the relationship where you like one another, trust one another, respect one another. Don't neglect the other two directions, as well
