My Boss Has Treated Me Badly For a Year. Is It Wrong to Just Text “I Quit” | JobSearchTV.com

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

I’m very clear about how to handle this including the one exception to the rule.

Becoming the CEO of Your Career

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I coach people. I help them perform better. I help with job search, more effective hiring, managing, and leading. Someone asked the question “how do I go about quitting my job? My boss has treated me badly ever since I started a year ago I don’t even want to give my two weeks’ notice as I don’t feel she deserves me looking out for her is it fair to just simply send a text saying “I quit.”

Now, there’s always one exception to the rule that I’m about to state. Let me just state the exception. If you’re being sexually harassed if you’re being physicallyStaff Retention | Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter attacked you quit you can give no notice you walk out the door you report to HR what has happened and why you’re leaving without any notice. it’s that simple. they’ll go into more detail with you. You share as much or as little as you want that’s your choice it’s your life. I make no encouragement about it. You get the hell out of there under those circumstances but I’m not leaving anything that suggests that that’s the case here.

Thus, it is appropriate for you to give two weeks’ notice and we walk into your boss’s office, you can simply say ‘look I know you’re not happy with my performance. I’m giving my notice. It’s been obvious for quite some time. You’re unhappy. I’ve never been quite sure how to please you. I think it’s just the best thing that I  leave now I can leave two weeks from now it’s your preference. Whatever you want is fine with me. I can go out today and we can shake hands and part however you want to part. But I want to give you the courtesy of two weeks’ notice so you can find a replacement for me. And, if you don’t want me to do that, absolutely fine.” That’s a mature way of doing it you give her the choice of whether you should leave or stay. You are the adult in the room. And if she goes ballistic, you just very calmly say, “I’m giving my notice. I can leave today. I can leave two weeks from today.”

“But but. I need someone!”

“But I’m not the right person. I’m just not the right person so I’ve decided to go. Again, as I said earlier, I can give you two weeks’ notice. I can leave tonight. Your preference.” That’s the way to do it.
