Everyone talks about mirroring body language in interviews, but what if you’re doing it completely wrong? There’s a fine line between building rapport and looking like you’re a psycho to the interviewer.
The First Question to Ask When You Are Contacted About a Job?
In my work in recruiting, I interviewed thousands of people, tens of thousands of people, and I always found it funny when people tried to mirror me because they did it really badly and almost came across like a psychopath. Let me teach you how to do it the right way so that this way you don’t come across like a loser or a psycho.

It’s really very simple. The right way to mirror starts off with their communication style. If they’re formal, be formal. If they’re casual, be casual. If they’re data driven, bring data with you. Match their pace. If they’re a fast talker, speak efficiently because they appreciate the efficiency and quick responses that come with speaking quickly. Slow talkers want time to think and process. Detail-oriented people want thorough explanations. Big picture people want high-level summaries. Match their pace. Match their priorities. If they talk about team culture, emphasize collaboration. If they focus on results, lead with outcomes. If they mention innovation, discuss creative problem-solving. That’s the way you mirror. It’s not about whether you lean in and make, you know, really crazy eye contact. It’s really about how you express yourself in order to connect with the audience.
