Workplace trauma can include a wide range of experiences from harassment and discrimination, to violence or accidents on the job. Regardless of the specific situation, coping with workplace trauma can be incredibly challenging. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People started to call me The Big Game Hunter when I did recruiting. I’d hunt down leaders and staff for organizations, did it for a long time. Now I provide no BS coaching and career advice for people globally and that advice can relate to job search, hiring more effectively, managing and leading better, workplace related issues. I make life and your career a lot easier for you.
And this case, I’ve seen many individuals struggle with the aftermath of traumatic events that can occur in the workplace. And I wanted to offer you five ideas for how to cope with it, how to respond to it, how to deal with it.
And it really starts off with recognizing that that’s what you’re experiencing. Symptoms of workplace trauma can include anxiety, depression, flashbacks, and difficulty concentrating and sleeping. It’s important to to get professional help if you’re experiencing any of these symptoms, because they can have a significant impact on your mental health, relationships, professionally and personally. and of course, your ability to function at work.
Secondly, create a support network. Having supportive people in place, trusted colleagues, friends, family members, as well as mental health professionals is important. Because it’s important to have people who you can open up to, so that you’re not holding onto this trauma. Being able to ask for help and reach out to others for support is very important during times where you’re experiencing this.
If necessary, take time off. Now. I know it’s gonna be hard for you to do. You’ve got a job, you feel responsible for it and you’re experiencing trauma. It may be necessary to take some time away from work to focus on your mental health and well being. And it’s not just simply about burnout, or returning to work. It’s about something more significant than even that.
Consider therapy. Therapy can be a very helpful tool during a time like this. You may find it necessary to take a leave of absence. It may be necessary to become . . . identify yourself as being disabled, and seek disability coverage. Having a safe and supportive environment for you to process your feelings in, developing coping strategies, working with a therapist can be very helpful for you.
And the last point I just want to remind you of is practicing self-care. Prioritizing your care when coping with workplace trauma can include things like mindfulness, hobbies, exercise, taking care of your physical and emotional health, in order to manage your stress, develop your resilience, and defeat the trauma that is within you.
So I just want to remind you that healing from the trauma is a process. It’s not a five minute situation. It’s going to take time to recover from it. But by recognizing the signs, building that support network, taking time off if necessary, considering therapy and practicing self care, you can begin to manage the impact of the workplace trauma and move forward in your career.
