A weekend celebration led to a few thoughts.

Getting Older

On a recent Saturday night, our family went out for dinner and had a nice celebration with our son. His birthday was coming up and we wanted to do a pre-celebration. After giving him a wonderful photo album of some early childhood memories, my wife went to sleep and my son and I spent some time in his room talking. He wanted to reciprocate and put together an album from our wedding.

As I was looking at photos of myself and others, I realize that aging had snuck up on me. I looked at photos of friends and how they had changed over years. It reminded me that life is finite and that we have a certain amount of time and then it runs out. Now. If you are Buddhist, you believe you have another shot at it unless you’ve achieved enlightenment in this lifetime; if you are Christian, perhaps you think of heaven , where the good parts of your life are replayed or there is some version of an idyllic wonderland… Whatever it was, you were raised to believe what happens after death.

Use just the awareness that I had that my time is running out. I’m in great health. I feel terrific. However, the reality is certainly more than half of my life is gone by. If I live to 100, my mobility will probably be diminished. My face will look different to me. I noticed this thing showed up with my neck a few years ago. No, I’m not trying to get cosmetic surgery. LOL!

Again, as I’ve said many times, a lifetime is not a long time. We would like to think of ourselves as immortal, but life has a way of showing us how foolish we are for holding that idea. Time is precious and we have to use it well or else we look back for what we did not do or say. All we did not experience or what we did not feel.

I’m not talking about achievement, per se. I’m talking about the feeling of a life well lived. That’s what sneaks up–– that so much of life is wasted in arguments about nothing in places like Facebook that don’t affect anyone or anything. They are just arguments for people to become solidified in positions and foster hatred toward one another.

I just simply say that I hope you use your time well because, frankly, aging sneaks up and I hope that it your time doesn’t run out before you realize that you needed to use it differently.
