Is Resigning a Job Bad

Is Resigning a Job Bad? | JobSearchTV.com

Someone asked whether resigning a job is bad and didn’t explain their circumstances. In this short video, I cover a few conditions. I also mentioned another video, “When Is It OK To Quit Without Giving Notice?”

Can Negotiating Salary Backfire?

Is resigning a job bad? I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter, a career and leadership coach, a former recruiter. And the short answer to the question is no.

You’re not a slave. If you don’t like your job, you are allowed to resign and go elsewhere. And there are specific situations where you can quit without giving notice. And I’ll have a link to that in the show notes.

But if you’re resigning, you want to do it courteously and without a lot of accusations about bad treatment or what have you. “I’m underpaid. I never get the good work.” There’s no point in that you’re going somewhere else; they already know.

So the idea very simply, is if you’re going to resign, give notice. Usually that’s two weeks; under some circumstances, it’s three. I know in Europe, it’s three months. But I’ll just say, giving notice, resigning a position, is not intrinsically bad. You’re going to something else.

Should I Confirm an Interview?

Now, if you’re not going to something else it’s going to cost you in certain ways, because resigning without having another position puts you in an awkward position with a next employer who wonders if you’ll do that to them.

“Why  did you quit? Why did you resign?”

” I couldn’t put up with it anymore.”

That’s an immature answer. You have to have polished answers that explain why you left and again, I’ll have a link to another video that I have that talks about specific circumstances where it’s okay to resign without giving notice.

But most of the time, give notice. During the notice period, do a great job and walk out the door with your head high and go to the next firm.
