Invisible Work | Career Angles
As I listened to audio files on the news of a presidential candidate talking down about farmers and blue-collar workers, I’m reminded that people like it when you look them in the eye, especially those who work in different levels of the organization than you.
They trust you more and you respect them more when you can look them in the eye and speak to them instead of talking to them while facing the wall of your office or cubicle.
If you work in technology, you would not have a job without the electrician it keeps the power going in the lines operative.
If you work at the desk or in a restaurant you and be able to do that without the farmer who is up at four in the morning working his or her farm.
If you work in an office building, there is a custodial team that takes out your garbage and keeps the building free of vermin.
Everyone is trying their best and has earned your respect by doing the invisible work that makes it possible for each of us to do what we do.
It shouldn’t be that hard to speak to someone and look them in the eye and give them that respect. After all, we are all dependent upon one another.
