Instead of Quitting or Giving Notice | JobSearchTV.com

30% of people are leaving their new job within 6 months. Here is a way to try to protect yourself in the event that you want to boomerang back to your employer.

Words to Lose and Words to Use

There’s ample evidence that new employers exaggerate opportunities when they hire. Part of that evidence is 30% of all new hires quit within six months of joining a firm. I won’t go onto the data beyond that, that’s a pretty shocking number– that 1/3, or almost 1/3 of people quit a job after joining a new firm. So what can you do to give yourself an insurance policy against that affecting you, that happening to you?

The answer is, instead of quitting, see if you can take a leave of absence. See if you can leave your firm for 90 days, and join a new firm and then make a decision after 90 days of working for a firm whether or not this is the right opportunity for you. What excuse do you give? There’s millions of excuses. Just do a Google search and I’m sure you can find excuses for why someone wants to take a leave of absence.

But this protects you. This gives you the opportunity to boomerang to your previous firm without losing much. And you can say to them, “you know, I need to take three months off. I need to take whatever period of time off. I’ve got a health problem. I’ve got this family issue. I want to return; I don’t want to quit, and basically explain that to HR, and then to your manager, because the manager is going to say ‘no, I need to have someone in that seat.’ Yada, yada, yada. HR may be more empathetic, and give you more of a free rein there. And you can say to them, ‘Look, I just have this problem I need to address and after 90 days, I’m sure it’s resolved, but I just have to be careful.’

So try seeing if you can take a leave of absence instead of quitting. And then along the way in the new firm, if you don’t like it, talk to the previous firm and say, ‘Look, I’d like to come back. I can be back in two weeks and return to my previous job. That protects you a lot more than anything else you can do.
