So, I work in an industry and a geographic location where my prior employer is VERY well known. He let me go from an executive-level position after only 11 months. Details of why are not necessary to this conversation and it had nothing to do with conduct, but suffice it to say I have a certain level of shame about it. He let me know that anyone who inquired of him would be told I left due to an unrelated reason and I believe there is no bad blood between us. I’m now trying to interview with CEO’s who all know (or know of) my former boss at one level or another. I feel guilty lying about why I’m not working for this well-known person any longer and in the two interviews I’ve had since when asked why I’m no longer working there I haven’t directly answered the question but insinuated that it was my choice. Should I just be honest and tell people I got fired? Is that a guaranteed interview killer?
