I spotted a post on LinkedIn from a resume writer named Katie McIntyre where she shared her data about how senior people get offers. You want to know how very experienced people get offers? I’ll tell you in a second. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search coaching and career advice globally because I make the process of finding work and succeeding at it much easier.
What she noticed is that people who got offers of between $200,000 and $500,000 or more didn’t rely on their resumes. Instead, they built relationships, they activated their network, they followed up with people. In addition, the people who got offers rarely applied online. What a shock. They sent messages to cross-functional stakeholders, potential hiring managers, warm connections, executives, recruiters. And let’s go one extra step: the people who did not get offers didn’t update their LinkedIn profile, didn’t prioritize relationships, didn’t reach out to mentors, didn’t offer to help others.
If you were a job seeker right now, what you should do: get a great LinkedIn profile. Include metrics that you measure and why you measure them. Know how you drive revenue for the business and reach out to influential people at companies. Ask questions that can’t be answered by Google. Know the value you can bring to a firm and stick to it. I’ll say that’s my add-in, by the way. And make a list of your mentors and send them a note of gratitude for teaching me whatever it is they taught you. Great advice for you.
