How Do You Negotiate a Promotion With Your Manager?
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
I was asked to contribute to an article about negotiating a promotion. I was asked to comment on this section, “Negotiating a promotion with your manager can be a challenging but rewarding process. It requires careful preparation, clear communication, and strategic persuasion. In this article, you will learn how to approach this conversation with confidence and achieve your career goals.
Know your value
Before you ask for a promotion, you need to know your worth. This means evaluating your skills, achievements, and contributions to the organization. You can use various sources of information, such as performance reviews, feedback, industry standards, and market rates, to determine your value. You should also identify your unique selling points, such as your expertise, leadership, or innovation. Having a clear and realistic sense of your value will help you justify your request and negotiate effectively.
My contribution was, “Most employees believe they are indispensable to their employer. They aren’t. In addition, most employees are not speaking to someone who can actually make the decision nor feel the freedom to do an end-run around their manager to get to a real decisionmaker. The work to justify a promotion occurs way before any performance review, feedback session, and the like by being seen as an SME within your organization for something that has value to the firm. Otherwise, you are just another employee and replaceable. Every time you can be visible to a leader, conduct yourself in a world-class manner. Never be average. Turn your motor on and be great at everything you do so you cannot be denied and if you are, the next firm will see your excellence.”
