How Do Over 50 Job Hunters Sabotage Themselves?
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Here are some ways in which people over 50 can sabotage their job search:
- Failing to Include a Photo on their LinkedIn Profiles: Mature workers might not include a photo because they are concerned about ageism. However, omitting a photo can make people seem untrustworthy or as though they are trying to hide something. It can also make them appear to lack technology skills.
- Having a Headline that Focuses on Employment Status Instead of Skills: Some mature workers use headlines like “Unemployed” or “Open to New Opportunities”. Using this type of headline focuses on their situation instead of their skills and what they can bring to the table.
- Not Keeping their LinkedIn Profiles and Resumes Consistent: Mature workers may be tempted to include more information on their LinkedIn profile than on their resume to showcase their extensive work history. However, recruiters will notice this discrepancy, which could hurt their prospects.
- Not Sending a Cover Letter: Mature workers might decide that a cover letter is not necessary. However, neglecting to include one can put them at a disadvantage compared to candidates who do submit cover letters. A cover letter also provides an opportunity to show off writing skills, which can be important for a job in any field.
- Being Reluctant to Negotiate: Mature workers might be hesitant to negotiate because they are just happy to have a job offer. This can work against them because employers expect candidates to negotiate. Mature workers should research salary ranges and try to negotiate for what they deserve.
- Failing to Network: It’s important for mature workers to let people in their network know that they are looking for a job. They should also try to expand their networks. Networking can help mature workers overcome ageism because it allows them to connect with people on a personal level.
- Being Hesitant to Apply for Positions If They Don’t Meet All of the Requirements: Mature workers might be more hesitant than younger workers to apply for positions unless they meet every single requirement. However, as long as they meet a majority of the requirements, they should feel confident applying. Employers often have unrealistically long lists of requirements.
- Focusing Too Much on the Past: Mature workers might emphasize their extensive experience to the detriment of highlighting current skills. However, it’s important to focus on the past 10–15 years when creating a resume and LinkedIn profile. Recruiters and employers are most interested in recent work history.
- Not Embracing Technology: Mature workers should demonstrate proficiency in technology. Failing to have an updated LinkedIn profile might be perceived negatively. They also should be comfortable with video conferencing and other technologies.
- Having a Negative Mindset: Mature workers might become discouraged by ageism, which can lead to a self-fulfilling prophecy. Negative self-talk is detrimental to the job search. It’s important to maintain a positive attitude and focus on your skills.
