I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I coach people I help organizations be
more effective and that can involve well people in organizations be more
effective better with a job search better with hiring better with managing
and leading people you know what force related issues workplace issues and this
video well I talk about "how can I nudge an employer to move faster?" That's the
question I received from someone now I want to basically say the conclusion
first but then give you a couple of tactics and the first thing is if you
have not created a great impression you are wasting your time because if you're
an ordinary candidate applying for an ordinary job, if you're a C candidate
applying for a job that you have limited qualifications for, what are you pushing
them for because they're not going to hire you and if they do think of the
throw an ordinary offer at you. The best way to start off with is natan
fall in love because, frankly, unless they're really interested, there's no
nudging an employer is never gonna work. So, let's thought up with that being
premise number one. Premise number two is only in the meter search process when
you have nothing going on and you're nudging them what are you gonna say I'm
close to something else with another offer I need you to move faster that's
not gonna work. Then, basically, they say, "well why don't you take the other offer?"
well I like this one I want to see what you guys think and they're gonna say
we're engaged in our process of trying to evaluate right now we have another
four people to talk with over the next two weeks and we'll get back to you for
Interested." That's the way it works. Now if you're really close to an offer,
what you can tell them is I'm told them receiving another offer I should have it
by tomorrow the day after tomorrow I'll check in with you when I have it any
sense of when you people are ready to make a decision about me and that at
least allows you to walk away cleanly because you've given them a chance to
get into the bidding, right? But it only works if you have something else.
remember if you threaten I've got another offer I'm close to another world
And you have nothing, well, you'll have nothing from them, too because people can
smell the BS it's just the way it is they smell it but if you actually are
close and you want to push them along, say, you know, I have a couple of
days after I receive the offer but that's it. It's good firm, a good job and
I'm also interested in you too and if you're not interested in me
that's fine I'm okay with it but just let me know whatever you decide and that
sort of casual attitude really works well
