Homogenized | Career Angles

Starting off with a story about how chicken tastes different in central Asia, I point out how you have been conditioned to conform and what you can do about it.
When my wife and I traveled to Central Asia to adopt our son almost 20 years ago, we traveled to Kazakhstan. We were going to be there for several weeks. Yes, that Kazakhstan made famous by Borat. We were living in an apartment and we were being taken to meet our son every dayb . But, the rest of the time, we were on our own. We would be taken to a place to pick up food, a supermarket and, then, there was the day we went to the takeout place.
The takeout place was a place that, like in the United States, they made rotisserie chicken. And I remember bringing the chicken back to the hotel room and taking a bite and, you know, it tasted like a game bird. It didn’t like a US chicken, which is pretty flavorless.
So much of our culture, homogenizes everything. That has no flavor, texture, and that’s the way it is in the workforce, too. For many people, the organization wants to create systems that you fit into, that creates a repeatable process that allows them to do things bigger, better, faster, cheaper, but doesn’t necessarily make you any happier or you like your work.
What can you do differently? The first thing is give voice as the person who points out that, at times, the Emperor has no clothes on and calls attention, in a respectful way, to the things that make a difference.
Doing a repeatable process basically can translate into hitting your head against the wall in a particular way that’s institutionally approved. Being great involves giving voice to your ideas, when, at times, people may not necessarily listen but they may figure out you were right later on.
I think back to Steve Jobs and the way he was described as a young man– kind of dirty, smelly, brilliant and I wonder how many of us, and, at times it’s me, too, have sacrificed ourselves on the altar of conformity in order to get by and I’ve left ourselves miserable. I know that’s been true of me at times.
By making that sacrifice, you decide what’s right for you. I’m not going to judge I hope you found this helpful.
