Highlight Your Fit in a Cover Letter

Someone wrote, “A key element of your cover letter is to demonstrate how you fit the position and the company. This means showing how your skills, experience, and personality match the requirements and the culture of the organization. Don’t just list your qualifications or achievements. Instead, show how they are relevant and valuable for the role and the company. For example, you can mention how you have used a certain skill to solve a problem, how you have achieved a similar goal in a previous role, or how you have collaborated with a diverse team. Use quantifiable results and concrete evidence to back up your claims and show your impact.”
I replied, “Cover letters are different than resumes. They are an opportunity to connect the dots between your experience and what a hiring manager needs. The easiest way to do that is to list the requirements and functionality flush left in the cover letter. Flush right, list how long and how recently you’ve used that skill or done that function. If you haven’t used that skill or done that work, skip it. List those skills used and the functionality you’ve performed. Precede it with a paragraph explaining your interest and what position you’re applying for. End it with a paragraph encouraging them to contact you and that you will follow up. This makes it easy for a reader to know how you can help them.”
