The one thing you need to start doing now in order to be ready for interviews
Misconceptions College Grads Have About Job Hunting
I want to talk to you if you’re entering your senior year, a recent graduate and you realize, “Hey, I’m getting out soon.” Or, I’m out! What the hell do I do now?”
I think one of the mistakes people make, it’s not just you, but people have all kinds, at all levels of experience make is they don’t practice anything. You can say to yourself, “I’ve read all this stuff so far, and I know what to say,” but, I want to tell you, it’s different hearing the words come out of your mouth. You have to actually say the words and you have to practice speaking in order to become effective.
So, you may have already been given a list of questions to prepare for interviews, and, I gotta tell you, most of these lists are going to be inadequate. You are going to be asked a lot more than that.
I’ll just simply say get yourself into situations where you can practice speaking, practice talking to an audience, hearing these questions and the answers to these questions come out of your mouth. Just opening up and talking because you’re used to texting, you’re used to Facebook, you’re used to whatever platform you’re writing for, or communicating with your friends on and that’s not the platform that employers are using. They are using interviews.
Launch Your Career. Get Ahead.
One of the best places that you can practice is Toastmasters. Now, generally, there will be people there are a lot older than you. But the real thing to think about is the opportunity to do what they call table topics, a two minute extemporaneous speech about something that you were only told about right then and there. What it teaches you is spontaneity in a situation, to be asked something and to be able to just handle it and develop the emotional maturity and strength to be able to respond intuitively and deliver something worthwhile.
You can also do short speeches. For example, the first speech that you are asked to do is an “icebreaker,” a four to six minute speech about yourself or something that floats your boat. It just something about you to introduce yourself to the audience. These opportunities to practice at Toastmasters will go a long way toward helping you on interviews.
There’s content and material that you need to learn, as well, about LinkedIn. Yes, I know it’s an old person’s platform but there are tools there that you can use, there’s things that you can take advantage of. There is resume writing and yeah, there’s some good basic stuff that’s available, but most of what I see is frankly, mediocre.
