My wife and I did a road trip on Mother’s Day weekend to visit her Mom, her extended family, and our son in the Northeast.
The forecast was for rain on and off all weekend, so I brought a pair of old shoes that tolerate rain and snow very well.
“Your black Merrills would have done the same thing and look much better,” she advised me.
“Yeah, but these are my favorites for this weather,” I replied.
Like dogs, shoes have a life span beyond the obvious—9 human years for each real year of life. These are 72, not much younger than me, and do a great job.
They are very much like people—as they get older, they are not as bright and shiny as they once were, but do a great job for their intended purpose.
Some of you should take that to heart as you evaluate talent for your staff.
Maybe what you need is an old pair of comfortable shoes and not the new, good-looking ones. Often, both will cost you the same, and the older ones will do an even better job without distracting you. They know their job and just do it.
