adjective
- (of a person) old or aging.
“she was elderly and silver-haired”
I’m over 70 and the word bothers me because of the association with someone who is less able, less capable and, by extension, incompetent.
Elderly is a word that we use to dismiss or minimize people and their abilities.
Not all older people are frail, infirm, incapable, or whatever adjective or adverb you use to describe someone older than you.
Just remember, one day you will be in their position… If you are lucky and the younger professionals are going to look at you dismissively unless you mentor others about their implicit and explicit bias toward older professionals.
