Job security is a myth. Don’t wait for a layoff notice! Protect your income now. Learn the 3 critical steps currently working professionals MUST take to stay market-ready.
Who’s In Charge of Your Career?
Stop ignoring the job market. Being currently employed doesn’t mean that you’re safe. Here are three things you can do to stay market ready just in case. I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. People hire me for no BS job search coaching and career advice globally because I make the process of finding work and succeeding at it much easier.
So first, spend a few minutes every Friday, like five minutes, checking job boards. Don’t apply, just look at salaries, skills, titles in your field so that in this way you can actually be market ready and worthy right now just in case.
Second, the secret weapon for you is going to be informational interviews, reaching out to people in roles or companies that you admire. The goal is to learn about industry trends, build a non-emergency network. Use this specific phrase when you reach out to them: “You know, I’m happy where I am, but I want to stay up-to-date on the work that your firm is doing. I promise I’m not going to ask you for a job because I’m not interested in one now. I just want to stay current with what’s going on at your firm.” That’s going to surprise them because they’re used to being hit up for jobs, and they’ll be more ready to talk with you.
Lastly, keep your LinkedIn profile up to date. It’s like an emergency exit plan for yourself. Doing that every few months will allow you to be contacted about opportunities. And at the same time, just in case you know something happens, your resume and LinkedIn profile can be up to date much more easily in case you need it. Include the recent work that you’ve done, the big wins that you had, your successes. You should be able to apply for a job with maybe 30 minutes of work, tops, instead of the hours agonizing over exactly what to put in your LinkedIn profile or resume.
So I’ll simply say, don’t wait for a layoff. Don’t wait for that conversation with your manager that says there’s going to be some stuff going on around here that I can’t protect you about. Do things proactively so that in this way you’re ready just in.
