This year I’m seeing the first of the artificial recruiters on LinkedIn. My 81 year old mother reminded me that when she was an executive secretary in the 50s and 60s this was quite common – the “recruiter role” was similar to “dear Abby”, always the same fake name, but the persons that would actually contact You would constantly change.
Bulk messaging – if a LinkedIn profile has no picture, or the picture doesn’t show a real person, avoid replying directly, look at the message body for contact information.
LinkedIn’s only unique selling proposition was that those using the site were verified humans. As soon as Micro$oft bought it, a whole host of changes were instituted that have progressively made it more akin to Instagram, where you see the sizzle without the steak.
The problem with fake profiles was rampant way before Microsoft. It used to be a photo with an aquamarine background indicated fake. There was a time where you could right click and do a Google image search and fine hijacked pictures all the time. For me, this was a hassle when people complained that they were being contacted by connections of mine who now had access to them for “non-professional purposes” (I’m sure you can figure that out), money laundering, get rich quick schemes and him and the like. The goal of LinkedIn for some time now has been to foster engagement. There is a little bit more personal connection/contact/posts, and will only grow with the rollout of LinkedIn Live to the entire platform (hopefully this coming year).
