Do employers actually look at your credit score when they're doing a
background check?. I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter.
and the coach works with people around job search hiring managing and leading
being effective in the workplace now the the direct answer to the question is no
they don't see your credit score however they do see things like only payments
they do see things like using lots of available credit or having a lot of debt
any evidence of mishandling of your finances
why do they care about this I'll give an example from an old client of mine who
was with a financial services firm and they were concerned when they were hiring for
certain types of positions that this . . . That the person that they hired might be a
theft risk so let's say you're working with a broker and you are concerned that
this broker has lots of debt and isn't paying their bills on time and there's
grandma's life savings at risk here can you imagine what a lawyer would do to
them if grandma's life savings weren't nestled by a broker who they knew who
they knew was a deadbeat on their bills or for example you work for a bank
and you're handling money and you're shaving a hundreth of the cent off of
every transaction that you're involved with and putting it into an account that
you control this is why firms do it they're not seeing the credit score they
want to see if you're a risk of bad behavior because if they learn of that
they have a difficult choice to make they have the choice of deciding whether
or not you're a risk a risk of stealing a risk of embezzling or they can trust you
Frankly, most firms are not gonna trust you if you're a
risk and thus managing your credit is very important
