Many years ago, I was certified to assist with leading a retreat weekend throughout the United States. One of the initial processes put the spotlight on me because I was going to have to point out to the attendees how their conduct in arriving to this weekend demonstrated their lack of accountability and the rest of their life.

I was to stand someone up and call attention to the fact that that your failure to follow instructions in attending this weekend showed up and other places in their life and that was not a good thing.

In observing the process for several years, I noticed that the attendees didn’t understand what the facilitators were going for. They didn’t understand that what was being sought was them acknowledging their lateness, for example, and how it suggested that they didn’t really care and how that lack of care didn’t show up in your life.

On my first time facilitating the process, I edited introductory section the lasted less than 40 seconds where, among other things, we defined integrity and accountability for them. On this occasion, everyone told me how smoothly the process went unlikely normally happened.

What I did was define success in the process for everyone and, once they knew what it was, they could figure out how it applied to them and learn from it (which is exactly what I hope to achieve).

Most of the time, success at work is defined by your conduct and your outcome. Constraints exist within which you have to operate. Unfortunately, there is more emphasis on behavior/constraints in the process to achieve success is overly controlled.

Make it simple. Tell them what you want and what limitations on resources exist.

Where you can, attempt to eliminate friction.

Tell them what needs to be done by. Let them figure it out.

Get out of the way and let the genius express itself.
