I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter, a coach who helps people professionally in
a number of different ways career development job search hiring more
effectively managing and leading there's a whole host of different things that
help with today I want to talk with those of you who are on staff and talk
with you about the importance of congruence you know I used to manage
recruiters if there's one thing most of us know about our crew ters their words
and deeds are not congruent farther if you're not familiar with the term
congruence, you know, it's "in alignment with one another." They are . . . I won't say
identical but you know if you put this here and you put this here they would be
consistent you wouldn't be able to tell the difference
Congruence in your behavior is one of the ways often you'll be able to stand out
from your peers and I say that because a lot of staff say a bunch of stuff and
then they don't back it up they don't deliver what they say they're going to
do they don't deliver when they say they're going to do it and the result
winds up being management is left to clean things up one of the ways that you
can always move ahead is by being congruent in your behavior with what you
say and calling attention to your successes along the way because if
people start to take things for granted from you well there's nothing that
stands out about you it's part of your own marketing in your own branding to
talk about, "I'm a woman / I'm a man who delivers on what I say I'm going to do . . .
(and sometimes more) so that you look great. You as a manager, you as my boss
you look terrific! You'll never have to worry about me.
and it's a way to really stand out when you're in the ranks so practice
congruence. Ideally you want to, shall we say, do it all the time but, if you can't,
you come clean about it early we ask for help and advice you talk to peers and
try and solve the problem where you go to the manager say I'm wrestling with
this. I need some help." So, this way, she or he is not surprised.
