As I coached someone recently, I noticed that when she became a little anxious, her speech speeded up so fast, that she forced herself to slow down slightly with a filler phrase—you know. She is not unique in how she handles situations where she her lack of certainty or confidence leaks out with such a phrase.
Part of your job is to inspire confidence.
When your lack of confidence comes out in such a way, it undermines how your competence is seen. Competence, by itself, is not enough. You have to give people the feeling that you can help them, too.
