Career Development: A Different Approach
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
When we think about career development, the traditional image that comes to mind is a ladder. We’ve been taught that success means moving up step by step in a linear fashion. But what if there is another way to think about it? In this blog, we will explore the concept of career development as a rock wall, with multiple paths and opportunities.
The Rock Wall Analogy
Imagine career development as a rock wall, with various paths and options for growth. Instead of being confined to a single direction, we have the freedom to navigate our own unique journey. Success doesn’t necessarily mean moving up in terms of leadership; it can mean broadening our scope or taking a step back. The key is to have options and opportunities to define what success looks like for us.
Play to Your Strengths
Just like climbing a rock wall, it’s important to start with our strengths. Identify what comes naturally to you and where you excel. By playing to your strengths, you can navigate your way up the wall more easily. If you’re unsure of your strengths, think about how children approach climbing a wall. They instinctively look for the easiest way to get started and learn along the way. As you move up, assess your opportunity areas and work on improving them. Your manager can support you in this process, creating a psychologically safe environment where it’s okay to fail.
Embrace Growth Mindset
Having a growth mindset and embracing strength-based leadership is crucial in career development. Rather than focusing solely on weaknesses, we should leverage our strengths to achieve our goals. This might involve taking a step back or sideways to acquire new skills and expand our toolkit. It’s important to remember that development doesn’t always mean moving forward; sometimes, you need to backtrack and explore different routes. By doing so, you gain a fresh perspective and can approach challenges from a different angle.
Defining Success
Success in your career is not limited to traditional notions of moving up the ladder or managing people. It can be defined by taking on more scope or stepping into new spaces. In the tech industry, for example, many engineers want to excel in their technical skills without transitioning into management. This shift in perspective has led organizations to reconsider what success means and how it can be achieved. Instead of a linear path, they are exploring parallel paths that allow for growth and recognition of individual contributions.
The Power of the Rock Wall Analogy
The rock wall analogy opens up possibilities and encourages us to think outside the box when it comes to career development. It challenges the traditional mindset and allows for more creativity in defining and pursuing success. By embracing different paths and options, we can shape our own unique journey and find fulfillment in our careers.
Conclusion
When it comes to career development, thinking beyond the traditional ladder analogy can be liberating. The rock wall analogy reminds us that there are multiple paths to success, and it’s okay to take a step back or explore new directions. By playing to our strengths, embracing growth mindset, and defining success on our own terms, we can navigate our way to a fulfilling and rewarding career.
