3 Ways Recruiters Can Help You Prepare for Video Interviews

Unedited

Hi, it’s Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter and welcome to Career Coach Office Hours. Whoo Hoo! March 4 2020. To a wonderful day for me, a wonderful day, hopefully for many of you as well. You know, I spend time on Tuesdays and Fridays at 1pm. Eastern. I’m here to answer questions about job search, how to hire more effectively, management leadership, help you with different workplace issues. That’s what how I define career coaching. It’s your totality of your career and not just simply helping you get a job. You know, I worked on recruiting for a long time, and filled a lot of positions. But I’m more than just simply a former headhunter, a former person filled jobs. I’m kind of masters. I also did postgraduate psychoanalytic training of the Institute for modern psychoanalysis. Now, I’m not your therapist, I coach people I’ve been formally trained to be a coach certified for career transition coaching, but there’s a lot of depth to it beyond simply that, I’m just simply say, folks, if you have a question about your job search, hiring more effectively, management leadership or want some advice about a workplace issue, put it into chat, be happy to answer your questions. And also say I forgot to take a quick peek to see if I got any more questions last minute. By email, I’ll just say if you watch this at a later date, you can always send the question to me by email at the big game hunter@gmail.com in the subject line, put the phrase office hours this way I know what it’s about. And, you know, I’m included in the next show that I do. Okay, now I start off these shows, I used to start them off as a morning show with a coffee toast. But now I’m just doing a little bit of agua. And just want to acknowledge you folks who watch this for all the hard work that you do day in and day out to be a professional. So a quick toast to you. And thank you. By the way, I’m someone who watched watches the marvelous Mrs. Maisel on Amazon Prime. And what a great SEER season this is so far. I almost seem like the second show was a, I don’t wanna say a throwaway episode, but didn’t really move the dial all that much, but was just a fun show. So if you’re watching Amazon Prime, and you haven’t started watching the marvelous Mrs. Maisel, you missing something fun. Now, today, the jobs report came out, I thought was really interesting. Because when you go to the jobs report, and you take a look at it, the headline numbers, it’s cold is phenomenal. 678,000 new jobs created. That’s a great number. And, you know, the labor force participation rate 63.3% is starting to inch up again. But there was a little thing they snuck in there. And that is of those 600,000 Plus jobs that were created. 418,000 were part time. That’s not so good translates into 220,000 full time jobs and a bunch of part time once translators lower wage jobs. So I’ll just say, folks, some of these, some of the reports that you’ll hear are just tell you about the top number, the 600,000 Plus, but dig in a couple of paragraphs, if you want to bls.gov the jobs report is there every time. Always take a quick read to see what they’re not telling you on the news, like I do, doesn’t take much to read this. They lay out a bunch of numbers. And like I said, it’s one of these things where if you just take a moment to read, you’ll see how the government’s trying to convince you more is going on. That actually is I’ll also say, you know, when we hear the term job, we think a full time, right? Not part time. So when you hear 600,000 jobs, it’s great. But how many of you want to work at an amusement park or waiting tables? Some of you do. How many of you want to bartend some of you do maybe want to work at a movie theater because those are part time jobs, right? Movie theaters are opening up. Shows are opening up all over the country theaters aside the higher ushers, again, was a part time jobs. Do you think that’s really worth counting? Probably not. But that’s

Tough Interview Questions: How Many Browser Tabs Do You Keep Open?

the jobs report. So I’ll just say it I wanted to make sure you had that kind of data so you can make smart decisions and understand how the government is trying to blow smoke action. Okay, now I’ve got a bunch of questions I received before this show. And I’m just going to cover a bunch of them here. Bear with me for a second. Oh, okay. So the first one, I think is an important one for many of you. What do you say in an interview when you’re nervous? Now, for those of you who are younger, this comes up all the time, because it’s like your first couple of interviews. And it’s important. And you know, it’s serious, it’s your career, you want that job, and you want to impress them, and you’re not quite sure what to do. So I’m just going to simply say, interviewers can smell your nervousness, they can pick up on it, they may hear it in your voice, they may hear it in your answer, your mannerism, the abrupt motions that just don’t seem to fit. And I just, I don’t think it makes sense to pretend to hide, I think if anything, they’re going to say things like, Oh, that’s okay. If when you tell them, I’m sorry, I’m a little bit nervous. This is my second interview. And I really want to do well for you. And they’re just going to calm your nerves down, and try and be kind to you. And if every once in a while, you have to pause for a second and take a deep breath and say, bear with me one second. And then go back into the answer. They’re going to appreciate the fact that you try to calm yourself down, rather than just perform poorly on the interview. So I’ll just simply encourage you acknowledge your nervousness, it’s okay. They don’t bite to heart and your human being so are they, you may get rejected, you may get rejected because you don’t answer questions. Well, that’s okay. This is practice for you, you’ll get better. Next question is, with such labor shortages? Do the best employers really need to use outside recruiters? The answer is they choose to do so why really very simple. They believe that recruiters save them time. And in doing so save them some money. So if I’m not going to mention a company by name, so they’re a great company to work for. But whatever your definition of the best companies, they get a whole lot of garbage resumes to, and they have to filter through them to get to the good stuff. Recruiters save them a lot of time in that regard, because they learn what a firm looks on the way of a candidate, not just simply skills and experience, but personality temperament, have the ability to interact with people how they’ll fit into a particular department or particular group in an organization. There’s a lot of stuff that goes into being an effective recruiter. And thus, I’ll just simply say, do they still use them? You bet they did. You bet they do. For the simple reason that firms are going to evaluate people that they said, they’re going to be closer to the market and some of the blind resumes receipt. And they have to be courteous to the person who I’ll use the example of waiting tables, who applies for the software development job. When I did recruiting, I used to get resumes from people who were produced chicken pluckers for Java development jobs, I can only imagine what those folks have to deal with. So, yes, they’ll still continue to use recruiters. It saves them time and money. I’ll just remind you folks, this, if you have a question for me, put it into chat. Also, visit my website, the big game hunter.us. There you can schedule time for a free discovery call scheduled time for coaching. I’ve got a lot there to help you. And

Come enjoy, enjoy the show. subscribe, give us a great review. It does help other people discover. Now let’s go on to the next question. Okay. Do companies take the feedback from exit interviews seriously? Generally not. There are exceptions. If you’re been sexually harassed, they’re going to take that very, very seriously. And rightly so. There’s other episodes where they’re not going to take it seriously. For example, the person who is going in guns blazing, let me tell you what’s wrong with this company and this manager to take you seriously, they’re not going to act upon it, they’re just going to consider you another jaded former seem to be former employee. And thus, if you think exit interviews are going to make them change their mind and conduct themselves differently. mistaken? F Ra, you’re leaving that manager you work for staying? They may coach them a little bit, but they’re not going to do a heck of a lot. Lesley wants to know, what’s the best way to get a job? The new job quickly I’m going to come back to that. Give me a second Leslie. Bear with me. There we go. So I’ll just simply say, folks, now they’re not going to take exit interviews all that seriously, nor act on a lot of the recommendations that you have for how Vega do their work better? Let’s not kid ourselves. Now, back to Leslie’s question wisely. I miss you. Nice talking with you earlier in the week. And let’s see now. So what’s the best way to get a job quickly? Answer is be introduced by someone who knows you who can vouch for your work, because it helps you cut the line and get to the front of it, you’re arriving with a testimonial to a manager. And thus, they’re more willing to pay attention to the recommendation that they get from whoever it is refers you. And thus, very simply, that’s the fastest way to cut the line to get to the front. So you’re not part of the black hole of applying online, you’re not just sending in a resume, someone is attesting to your capabilities vouching for you, that gets to the front. You still have to interview, you still have to negotiate salary, there’s a lot that goes into this, they may want to see a resume first, you still need a decent resume. So there’s a lot still that you have to do. But the idea is, let’s get to the front of the line. So that this way you have a shot. Okay, now I’ve got a message from someone else. If a company can’t seem to find the time to schedule an interview with you, even though they wanted to do so because they are so busy. Once you say wouldn’t want to, you wouldn’t want to work for them.

Which Is Better–Applying for a Job Directly or Using a Headhunter?

Well, I started off with the premise that maybe they are legitimately busy. So I give people the benefit of the doubt here. And I pause and I go, Okay, it’s a little crazy busy for them. Or they’re stalling for time, because from the time they originally contacted you until now, maybe the manager was close to making an offer and then weren’t aware of it. So they’re stalling a little bit. And it doesn’t mean that you’re going to be rejected. It just means they’re doing business. Just like when you’re involved in a job search and you’re close to an offer. And someone else wants to talk to you, you may not immediately go and schedule that interview, right. Same thing for them. They’re buying a little bit of time, and they’re trying to see whether or not they can close this with someone else. Or if the manager may be on vacation, the manager may have project commitments they don’t want to take time away from there’s a variety of variables here. Remember, you may be talking to the screener. They have to work with a hiring manager. The Twain is different there. And thus, you may be running into that a number of these possible scenarios too. So I wouldn’t necessarily be Close the door. But after they schedule, I’ve noticed what’s going on. And I noticed whether the department just can’t make time for you after the after you meet with them the first time, if this is just with the HR screener, they may have multiple priorities certain times of the year. Remember, they’re doing us salary reviews, they’re doing cost benefit analyses on different things. They’re recruiting for multiple positions, there may be a priority job that they’re trying to deal with. This lots of stuff going on beyond simply interviewing, they may have to contend with, so don’t take it personally right away. Just notice what happens after this. Okay. I’m just gonna remind you, folks, if you have questions about job search, hiring, management leadership, or once advice about a workplace issue, or the chat, be very happy to answer your question. And I’ve got more than were sent to me. So let’s move on. What should you do if you accidentally miss the scheduled job interview? You still want the job? So I’ve got a pause for a second and say, how do you accidentally miss an appointment? Like you put it in your phone? Right? Yeah, there are pop ups associated with it reminders that you set for these things, right? They’re automatically generated on your phone. And normally, you have something that they tell you 15 minutes before appointment, that you have an appointment coming up. How do you miss this? So let’s not kid ourselves here. You’re better off calling them and saying, I’m sorry, I missed the appointment, I can make excuses for you give you explanations. The fact is I missed the appointment. And I really would like the interview with you. Is there any possibility I could get onto your calendar for tomorrow, the day after, whenever it is, so that this way, you haven’t completely blown it, you have an opportunity to try again. And they may hold a grudge. that’s their prerogative. But, you know, the long the short of it is he try and you try and say it in a way that conveys sincerity? Can we get another question? If you were scheduled with a recruiter but we’re a couple of minutes late? And they said they were on their way to another meeting? Would you think they were just using as a number I’ll interpret that is trying to convey numbers that for their their own reporting as possible, or I don’t know how many a few minutes late means to you 15 minutes, 20 minutes. That may be too long for them to want to take time and thus, they took a meeting during that period that they originally scheduled for you because they interpret us and OSHA. So I’ll simply say. And also there’s certainly the possibility walked in and didn’t conduct yourself well, or you looked poorly or a bias may have shown up and they decided they didn’t want to hire. And they’re never going to say this of course, old Young. Dressed poorly. You know, classism shows up ageism shows up. I’m saying five minutes late. They’re blowing smoke atcha. Or they may have forgotten the appointment.

What Are Strategies for Applying for Jobs When I Don’t Meet The Experience?

And the result winds up being they were on their way to another meeting. If it were me, I would pause and know. I’m five minutes late. I apologize for that. But we were scheduled to meet at this time. Just so I understand what happened. Why are you no longer available during this time that were scheduled to me? Now they may say to you, we view this as a critical events. Now, some firms are provided recruiting clients and I would say just have them apologize, acknowledged the lateness. And this way, we know they’re well meaning or say there was traffic or the subway was the late so I had a heart attack on the train. And the train was delayed. And I apologize, I couldn’t get a line to be able to call you. And even so I was like so I would appreciate if we had our appointment, or we reschedule for another occasion. But there’s something more going on there for them than what they’re saying to you. I don’t know exactly what that is. And these other things that I’m talking about acknowledging the lateness, firms like that they consider that respectful being A viewer. So I hope that’s helpful too. And I’ll just simply say, Oh, we got more here. What if you’re having technical difficulties and can’t seem to get into a video interview and having phone issues? What would you recommend is insane to someone for an interview? Okay, great question. Usually, there’s some number to communicate with. You know, I might try and logging on and using chat to say, I’m having trouble with the video. It worked an hour ago, for some reason it isn’t working now, please bear with me on here. And I’ll be connected with you as soon as I know, on my calendar, and I realize I don’t have my phone number there. So I reached out to them, they can email me and you could have might have been able to email them, to let them know that there’s a technical issue that you are facing. So if you’re running into a phone issue, I’m not sure where a phone issue is, in this particular case, most of our phones weren’t perfectly. If we were trying to deal with a zoom map. Maybe audio wasn’t connecting, can’t tell, I would just simply say I was having technical issues. Online, I was trying to get on my computer, I couldn’t connect the password that soon provided didn’t work correctly. I tried to copy and paste it didn’t work. So I tried connecting on the phone, the Zoom phone app, again had problems. I apologize, I wasn’t able to connect with you, I really would like to have this interview. That’s the simplest way to do it. And you use a tone of voice that conveys sincerity. If you’re typing it, if you’re using a keyboard to communicate this, just very simply say I really had problems connected. And You sound angry or slightly anxious. In how you write. And maybe since you’re you’re sending email or texting someone, you’re sending multiple texts to them, so that this way they see you’re trying to express yourself to them and not just simply one ginormous text. Again, hope that was helpful to you. And again, that’s what the question I just answered from someone was. Let’s keep going. And they’re more questions. Just prefer the chat. As you can tell, I’m trying to try to answer everything. What would you do if you accidentally? Okay, that’s the one I just answered. Thank you. When you get knocked down? Will you stay down? Or get up? How do you survive a setback or manage a challenging situation? Wow. I hadn’t noticed that question in advance. Whoa. Sometimes you might be. By the way, before I answer that question, I love the video interview answer from you. But what if you’re not able to connect on the phone with a phone number? provided? He just send an email set? Yes, you can absolutely send an email, but send it quickly. So if you make them think for too long, they create stories for themselves.

Better Than Applying Through The ATS

So try and message them quickly. So they know you weren’t a loser who stood them up. But what you were is someone who just had a technical. Now back to the question. When you get knocked down, will you stay down? Get up? How do you survive a setback? or manage a challenging situation? I’m going to treat this as an interview question. So when you get knocked down, will you stay down or get up? How do you survive a setback or manage challenging situation? I would go right to the How do you respond to a challenging situation? And tell a story about how you faced one of those challenging situations. And there are a number of different frameworks. I suggest people work with the classic one everyone’s heard his star situation task Action Result. situation. obstacle here I think is the good one situation obstacle action result. I stepped into a situation where you tell them about what the situation was you stepped into. And we had a problem with such and such A user population was resentful. They weren’t happy, whatever the story is. So what I did was, and then you tell them what you did with the result being. And they talk about the outcome that you were able to achieve achieve. And you try and tie it into a metric, money saved money or percentage improvement. Remember, it’s like a children’s story. Everyone lives happily ever after, and children’s story, and stories. And that’s what you’re trying to accomplish here. We’re trying to make sure that everyone knows you created miracles, you part of the heavens, the skies opened up, and everyone was happy with the result. That’s the way you tell that kind of story. I have a few more minutes, because I have a session at 145. Eastern. So I’m going to go 35 minutes today. And thus, if you have questions for me, put them in the chat, be happy to answer them for you. And let me go on to the next one that was sent to me from on the show. This is from someone who’s a PhD candidate. To what extent would you disclose ongoing research during a job interview, and this is for someone who’s going for a PhD in capsid, I might speak on a limited basis, and try and deal with it from a big picture perspective. So you might say something along the lines of, you know, I’m doing some research into fill in the blank. I don’t want to go into a lot of detail about our research. But I’m collaborating with Professor so and so at the University on a project or on a grant that they have related to origins of COVID, I’m just taking something random, that actually has nothing to do with COMSOL. And it’s a one year grant, we’re coming up in the last few months, I know, the This interview is starting nine months into the Grand Sorry, I’m sure I’ll be able to start on time. And they may probe a little bit. And when they get into tender areas, you have to politely brush it away and say, you know, I can deal with this in a high level. But there are areas it’s not appropriate for me to go into. I’m assisting someone else’s project. And I don’t want to do anything that would risk compromising their project and their research. So I can talk about certain things. But other things, other things I won’t be able to. And I think that’s a very sweet way to deal with it if your employer of sorry, if your resume has been viewed three times by the employer? Does it mean you’re the person they’ve chosen to hire? No, no,

Two Final Interview Mistakes That Will Blow the Offer

it doesn’t mean that at all. What it means is, someone’s been looking at your profile for search, maybe they have questions or they forgotten certain things about your background, there is no guarantee that you’re the person who’s being hired. You only have that guarantee after they’ve checked references, when they say we’d like to make you an offer. The offer is for such and such. That’s, that’s what it means nothing else. Everything else is us trying to read something into a situation that may not exist. See, now, when a recruiter asked for specific clients, you don’t want to reveal the names. How do you approach this? Oh, I love this. So what they’re trying to do is to get you to reveal who the hiring manager is hold them, ostensibly under the guise of a reference check, and then try and get job offers. It’s one of the classic training things that third party recruiters are brought up with as a way of trying to do business development. After all, they’re checking a reference. They’re trying to show that they’re thorough at the end of the conversation. They’re going to flip this inside you as you can see, we try to do meticulous work for our clients. And we’d like to bring this methodology to you too. So if you’re trying to fill something, I’d love to help you. And thus they’ve opened the relationship with someone that doesn’t benefit you. It’s designed to benefit them. So the way to deflect it is I can’t give you my client context. It carried me what we need. We can’t represent you, okay? And then shut up. Okay? Because the next thing you’ll discover is whether they think they could actually place you. Because if they actually think they can, they’re going to dive in and set. Okay? And they’ll try and make some excuse for their bad behavior. Because to me, it’s better behavior on their part. And you learn something about them, you’ll learn that you can completely trust them that they’re going to try and play games with you, for their benefit, not yours. So the idea is to laugh them off, and I can’t give you my client, he killed me. And then go from there. represent you? Okay. Last question for today, just because I’ve got a 145. And I want to be on time. Last question for today. I love this one. How do you deal with a bad boss? I hope you don’t take offense. They use this example. But bad boys bosses are like abusive spouses. They promised to change their behavior. You called the police on that person. I’m so sorry, I’ll never happened again. And they’re great for two weeks, but then something sets them off, and they’re back to their bad ways. The only way to deal with a bad boss is to very politely say that’s not acceptable. And then from there, you either walk into HR, and ask for their support, or if the company is too small and you don’t say anything. If it’s a small firm, what you do is, is you decide at that particular moment, I’m going to look for something else, because you can’t change them. They operate intensely, obnoxiously and hurtfully. And they just don’t have any emotional intelligence. So, start getting your resume dusted off, start getting out on interviews, there are firms hiring, you know, there’s a lot of them they’re trying to hire and go find something else. Don’t quit right away on this. They’re physically abusive, sexual harassment involved. There’s a lot of individual reasons why you should quit. But this doesn’t sound like it from what you told me. Bad boss. Well, that doesn’t tell me enough to tell you that you shouldn’t walk out the door and leave right away. So I hope you found this helpful today.
