Career Change Exploration Activities

“Another effective strategy to assess clients’ career interests, values, and skills is to engage them in career exploration activities. These are activities that expose clients to different career information, resources, and opportunities, and allow them to learn more about themselves and the world of work. Some examples of career exploration activities are career fairs, informational interviews, job shadowing, internships, volunteering, and online research. You can use these activities to help your clients expand their career awareness, explore their options, and test their assumptions and expectations.”
How Do You Know You Should Change Careers?
I replied:
For experienced professionals, start with multiple informational interviews with people doing the work you want to do. Don’t rely on one person. Speak with several people doing the work and look for patterns in the answers. I’ve found that few experienced professionals have the time for job shadowing or the financial ability to take on an internship.
Reading about the job is not the same as speaking with someone doing the job.”
