Being Accountable

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

There is nothing more distancing to a professional relationship than not keeping your commitment to someone else.

A little trust is lost.

Then, a little more is lost.

That a little more . . . And more . . . And more.

It’s gone.

Acknowledging and admitting mistakes is part of a quality relationship professionally and personally.

Understanding why you repeat these mistakes is part of your growth.

No one should be changing to accommodate your failure to keep your word.

I’ve never missed a flight (although there was one time when a flight left early where I made them stop the plane and walk us out to it).

If your initial flight is to lead at 9 AM, are you at the airport on time?

If the press conference for you to receive the $400 million lottery check was to be held at noon, would you be on time?

Me, too.

Why are these any different?

Ideally, you are aiming for perfection with your commitments.

Sometimes, events change and it’s important to acknowledge that you made a different choice.

For example, you promised someone in your office that you would do something and you’re wife-husband-partner call to let you know that your child was at the hospital and was calling for you. Of course, you will go to your child and you might look for an alternative way to handle the commitment on your way. And if that person dropped the ball, be accountable to someone for the fact that they did and then speak to that person about the impact of their failure.

So much of your professional success is tied up in your relationships with others and your ability to fulfill commitments. Each failure is a little cut that bleeds a drop of blood. Eventually, hemorrhaging occurs. Usually, you will be the last one to know that the final cut is fatal.
