There’s a famous sales training story uses a football metaphor. It teaches perseverance.
“There are salespeople who give up on the sale and they with the 50-yard line. There are other salespeople who give up at the 20. Others make it down to the 10. Some make it down inside the one before walking away. The salespeople will never learn how close they were to punching in and earning the commission.”
I don’t care who the athlete or entertainer is, they started out young and having fun. Like the salespeople the stories above, they have the idea that they like to do this is a career. Each reach their level and persevere further.
Some give up at the first will audition. Some people walk out on stage for the first time and realize their people with more talent than they and give up, never walking out on stage again.
Using baseball as an example, very few of them have the talent and do the work to make it to the major leagues, let alone to win the World Series. Along the way, they have learned how to adjust, not simply when they hit or pitch but when they field and travel from game to game.
There’s always someone trying to take the job. There’s always someone who wants to defeat them and get them out of the lineup.
People become successful when they start treating their love as a profession with responsibilities and requirements of them. They don’t shirk from them; they embrace them.
That’s the difference between amateurs and pros. Be honest. Which one are you? Do you want to be a pro? Be prepared for failure and uses an opportunity to learn something.
Amateurs give up and settle.
Which one are you?
