I grew up in the building on the left of the white SUV. There was a courtyard between the two wings of the building with a small statue of Cupid that should have been a fountain that never was. We first lived on the 4th floor next to the fire escape before moving to the 1st floor to avoid walking up those flights of1173-1175-grand-concourse-bronx-ny-primary-photo stairs every time. A tree or two emerged from the sidewalk begging the sun for light as well as from the dividers between road access areas. It was ugly then, too.

There were parks nearby where my friends, now in their 70s, and I would play sports or hang out. Wooden benches held up by concrete slabs surrounding the small fields were where people sat watching us play softball in warmer weather and football in cold weather. Looking down on us was an elevated subway line, its metal beams carrying trains by us past the old Yankee Stadium to enter the ground and transport people to work in Manhattan. Industrial ugliness surrounded us always.

And there were times I left New York City and wondered why do we live there?

I remember once returning from a weekend volunteering at a site on Seneca Lake and wondered why I live somewhere so ugly.

There is real beauty everywhere we look in the people we meet. But there is something different about the natural beauty that enlivens our soul.

Where do you find is that place to refresh yourself and connect with your soul?’
