I agree with you @Jeff Altman. It’s do or die. But … often with IT one has to decide to specialize, becoming and expert in one area, to advance one’s career and be recognized as an expert or become a generalist. One has to choose to be trained in the latest programming language, or database technology, etc. or be trained in-depth in a specific area. This can contribute to “sudden death” when the cheese moves. So … is it better to be a generalist or a specialist?

@Jeff Altman excellent response. I agree completely. I’ve re-invented myself several times in my career going from research electrical engineer who knew how to write C code for micro controllers, to web developer who knew how to admin UNIX servers and open source databases, to information security analyst (application and system vulnerability management), log management, security awareness, to my current role as an information security consultant (architect).
On the wall of my home — near the front door so I can see it every morning before I head off to work — there is a framed print of a lion with gazelles in the background. This quote is printed near the bottom:
*Every morning in Africa, a gazelle wakes up, it knows it must outrun the fastest lion or it will be killed. Every morning in Africa, a lion wakes up. It knows it must run faster than the slowest gazelle, or it will starve. It doesn’t matter whether you’re the lion or a gazelle-when the sun comes up, you’d better be running.*
@***** Thanks, Khurt. You’re doing it right and everyone who thought specializing in being a Lotus Notes developer or admin without making a move to Sharepoint or Salesforce is sucking wind.
