Advice from a Former Baseball Player,

Advice from a Former Baseball Player

Unprofessional

I interviewed Darin Alpert or repvue.com not long ago. He shared this post on LinkedIn. I thought there were great lessons in it:

A few years ago I got to spend the day with my childhood idol Darin Erstad. As an adult, the admiration is still there because of the human he is and we have a sweet text chain going haha.

He’s a special person/athlete.

Caught last out of 2002 World Series for the Angels.

1st pick in 1995 MLB Draft.

National Champion punter/kicker for Nebraska football team.

8 year head coach of Nebraska baseball.

The list goes on and he’s one of the hardest working, grittiest, humblest athletes out there.

He also hopped on Zoom and chatted with one of my old teams with his invaluable lessons.

He’s such a great leader and had this to share.

Empty the tank- even if you’re at 80% give 100% of your 80% and be able to look at yourself at the end of the day knowing that you gave it your all.

Find your diversions – make sure to give yourself time to decompress.

When times are tough – check your mindset and make a change + realign with the team “we are in this together.”

Don’t play scared. Give yourself permission to fail. It will make you better.

Embrace the suck!! Give it your best effort and be able to live with it. It might not be good enough but it’s the best that you had.
