About LinkedIn Recommendations | No BS Job Search Advice

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Someone wrote, “When checking out someone, I always look for recommendations. And specifically, the ratio between those given and received.LinkedIn That speaks volumes about the individual. How many recommendations you have received and given?”

I replied, “I’m going to be the wet blanket about recommendation ratios using myself as an example. I coach people. I don’t see the work of the people I coach. They can see my work. I can’t see their work. I won’t game the system with reciprocal recommendations. Like endorsements where people endorse me for a number of categories (they can see my work) and then expect I will endorse them for theirs (I won’t), I ask, “You’re in (Mumbai, Berlin, Shanghai, Cairo). How do you think I’m supposed to know about your work? I can write, “She’s terrific,” or “he’s a really good guy!” What does that do for you? Fake recommendations are no different to me. You are connected with someone. You do recruiting/coaching/sell insurance/whatever. What kind of glowing recommendation can you write for someone and their work?
