4 Micro-Actions to Create More Job Leads
By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter
Building on my series, here are four brand-new 15-minute micro-actions to generate high-intent job leads today.
1. Reverse-Engineer “Patent Assignee” Team Expansion (15 Minutes)
When technology firms, industrial enterprises, or pharmaceutical companies file new patent applications, the inventors listed on the filing are actively building out the technical or operational teams assigned to commercialize that IP. These filings reveal product roadmaps and expanding budgets months before public hiring requisitions are drafted.
Spend 15 minutes finding these expansion teams:
-
Search Google Patents (
patents.google.com) using:assignee:"[Target Company]"filtered by Filing Date (newest first). -
Isolate a filing from the past 90 days and identify the primary internal inventors listed on the document.
-
Locate the primary inventor on LinkedIn and send a targeted peer note:
“Hi [Name], I came across [Company]’s recent patent filing regarding [Technical Topic/Method]. The approach your team took to solve [Operational Bottleneck] was exceptionally sharp. As an operator in the [Domain] space tracking innovations in this sector, I’d love to connect and follow your division’s progress as you bring this framework to market.”
2. Mine “Corporate SEC Form 8-K” Filings for Leadership Shifts (15 Minutes)
Publicly traded enterprises must file an SEC Form 8-K within four business days of a material event such as the appointment of a new C-suite executive, a major divisional restructuring, or an acquisition. New executives are immediately given hiring budgets to reshape their organizations, but official job postings lag behind their arrival by weeks.
Spend 15 minutes targeting executive transitions:
-
Access the SEC EDGAR database or the Investor Relations page of a target enterprise.
-
Search recent 8-K filings specifically under Item 5.02 (Departure of Directors or Certain Officers; Election of Directors; Appointment of Certain Officers).
-
Identify an incoming VP or Chief Officer who joined within the last 30 days and send a direct 2-sentence note:
“Congratulations on taking the helm of [Department/Division] at [Company], [Name]. As you begin evaluating operational workflows and team capacity during your first 90 days, I wanted to put my background on your radar as an operator specializing in [Your Specialization/Value Metric]. No immediate ask—just wanted to connect early as you map out long-term team initiatives.”
3. Leverage “Alumni at Vendor Partners” for Unlisted Intelligence (10 Minutes)
When your target enterprise uses third-party platforms (e.g., Salesforce, Workday, Snowflake, or AWS), those vendors deploy dedicated enterprise account managers and solution architects to support the client daily. University alumni working at those vendor firms know precisely which departments are scaling, where operational bottlenecks exist, and who holds budget authority at your target company.
Spend 10 minutes locating these strategic connectors:
-
Search LinkedIn for employees at a primary software vendor used by your target firm.
-
Filter results using your University Alumni network.
-
Reach out to an account lead or consultant with a brief message:
“Hi [Name], I saw you’re managing enterprise client initiatives over at [Vendor Firm] after graduating from [University]. I’m currently evaluating leadership moves in the [Target Industry] space, specifically tracking operations at firms like [Target Company]. I’d value connecting with a fellow alum who has a pulse on how scaling teams in our domain are optimizing their tech stack this year.”
4. Optimize “Structured Career Break” Metadata (5 Minutes)
Recruiter search tools penalize profiles with unexplained gaps in employment history, often dropping those profiles in automated ranking scores. However, LinkedIn’s backend treats the official Career Break module as a structured, positive metadata field that maintains your search indexing when configured correctly.
Spend 5 minutes updating your timeline syntax:
-
Go to your profile’s Experience section, click +, and select Add career break.
-
Select a structured category (e.g., “Professional Development,” “Full-Time Caregiving,” or “Career Transition”).
-
Add high-value domain keywords into the description box highlighting skills maintained or acquired during the transition (e.g., “Completed Advanced Cloud Architecture certification while mapping out next executive leadership move”).
This simple adjustment ensures your profile passes through recruiter date-filter algorithms smoothly without dropping your match score.
The Bottom Line
Sustainable job search momentum comes from calculated, compounding execution. Pick one targeted micro-action every morning, execute it cleanly, and force hiring managers to interact with you directly.
