I'm Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter. I'm a coach who helps people perform at a high level professionally in a variety of ways-- Job search, hiring more effectively, managing and leading, workplace related issues, executive coaching, career development. Like I said, workplace related stuff.
Three things that you can do to be a leader that people want to follow. Number one, hire people who are inspired to do great things. If you've got to motivate them, that's a distraction for you. That's basically saying, "Come on, guys. Come on, ladies. Do it. Come on." That's effort on your part.
Why don't they have the internal drive to do great things? If the problem is your evaluation process, your selection process, that's on you and you have to learn better ways. Yes, I can help you with that but there are ample ways to do it without me.
Number two. Once you have these people on board, think in terms of what does success look like for them? What's the target that they're aiming for and how soon. Define it clearly. No hedge phrases.
"Well, maybe if you could . . . " Just define it clearly. What success is it going to look like. Do it during the interview so they know what they're stepping into. Because, from their standpoint, just like yours, surprises are rarely good, right?
Step number three, look at constraints that exists. Place constraints upon how they might approach the problem. Look at systemic interference that gets in their way. Placing constraints on what they can and cannot do in order to achieve this and, then, from there, saying, "Now, go out and do it in your particular way given these constraints, given the fact that the institution has certain constraints that we have to respect. All told,if you've done a great job of hiring people, they will deliver, right?
