3 Signs of Imposter Syndrome and 3 Strategies to Build Confidence

By Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter

Here are some tips from my experience as a career coach:

The Warning Sign of a Problem or That They Aren’t Sure

  1. Three common signs and symptoms of imposter syndrome:
  • Feeling like a fraud – You feel like you don’t deserve your success and are just fooling people. You chalk up accomplishments to luck rather than skill.
  • Fear of failure – You’re terrified of being exposed as incompetent, so you work extremely hard to avoid failure at all costs. Even small mistakes feel catastrophic.
  • Discounting praise – When complimented, you think “They don’t really know me,” “They’re just being nice,” or attribute it to factors other than ability, like charm or hard work.
  1. Three effective strategies to overcome imposter syndrome:
  • Reality-check the evidence – Keep a file with evidence of your accomplishments, like awards, publications, positive feedback. Review it when you feel inadequate.
  • Talk to a mentor or friend – Confide in someone you trust about your feelings of fraudulence. They can offer reassurance and a more objective perspective.
  • Adopt a growth mindset – View challenges as opportunities to improve rather than tests of your inherent abilities. Focus on progress over perfection.

The key is realizing imposter syndrome is common among high-achievers and doesn’t reflect your true capabilities. Be kind to yourself and focus on developing genuine confidence. My years of experience tell me you’ve got this!
