You’re Fighting Over What? | No BS Hiring Advice

Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter makes the suggestion to you about negotiating salaries with new hires. This was recorded many years ago. Even so, some labor markets are pretty good.

The Myth of the Passive Candidate

Hi, I’m Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter and I’ve got more no BS hiring advice to help you as an HR professional, hiring manager or small business owner do an even better job of staffing

Now, as I’m doing this video at the end of 2014, I want to tell you that for a lot of skilled positions, there is a pretty strong labor market and yet firms are behaving in a way that, I think, is pretty ridiculous

It’s not like three thousand dollars or $2,000 is going to break the bank, but I’m watching organizations get into arguments with job hunters over two or three thousand dollars and a time where, if the candidate walks away, it will take them another eight weeks to find someone. Does this make a lot of sense to you?

Because it sure doesn’t to me. The two or three thousand dollars that you’re arguing over is basically more than the cost that you’re going to spend interviewing, yet again!

All I would say is don’t fight over nonsense. Concede the point. The candidate is happier. You’re at the point where your closing and you try to create a positive impression and the firm’s you’re competing with and I must tell you in skilled labor areas you’re competing for talent now. You’re just not the only one in play anymore the other firm is going to give it to them. You know, the fact of the matter is it’s not the recession anymore. These are strong markets for skilled talent. $2000. $3,000 $5,000. What’s the point of arguing about this?

At the end of the day, you’ll get your person on board. You’ll work them hard. You’ll get things done and you’ll be able to stand in front of your competition within your firm and say , “look at the results I got and all it cost you was an additional two or three thousand dollars
