Jeff Altman, The Big Game Hunter simplifies what you need to do in order to successfully transition from the military.
Transitioning from the military to civilian life is complicated on a log of levels. 1 of the things I found in talking with people is often they are getting better advice. 1 of the reasons that you are successful in the military is that discipline you were taught, the purpose that you had and the impact if you didn't fulfill your goals and responsibilities, other people get hurt or worse. I'm telling you that the same qualities that you demonstrated in the military are going to serve you well in this job search. Don't believe the bull shit about how you can coast your your way in. Don't go for "the dream job." Get yourself back to work. Get yourself focused and intends on finding that next organization because the right firm in the right organization is going to review your you for that very quality. This made you successful in the military. Again, the dream job advice that you are getting it is all wrong. There are no dream jobs. You know it and I know it. Let's not kid ourselves. It's time to get back to work and you have to drive yourself with that same discipline they got you up early in the morning with reveille. At the end of the day, you finished up in great shape, focused, and by putting all sorts of great effort to make sure that if things got tough, you, and everyone else around you was ready. That's what's can get you to work.
