Speaking Up

Speaking Up | Career Angles

I know that businesses encourage people to be “team players,” but there is a time when it is critical to go further and speak up. When we go outside the organization, people who speak up are called “whistle blowers.”

Examples include someone like Karen Silkwood who spoke up about nuclear plant hazards. Others include Sherron Watkins who pointed out Enron’s fraudulent accounting practices and Alayne Fleischmann who pointed out illegal conduct at JPMorganChase, Mark Felt “Deep Throat” of Watergate fame  and Frank Serpico who the whistle on bribery and corruption in the NYC police department,

Usually whistle blowing starts with speaking up and being ignored yet knowing you are doing the right thing. I wish there was someone who spoke up about the Boeing 737SuperMax.

Is there something you know you should be speaking out about where your silence provides approval for other’s bad behavior?

Speaking out requires practice and confidence.

I worked for a firm and observed the owner make a racist comment about an employee that cut her to the core. We made eye contact and eventually met. I would not accept this was OK and wound up being deposed in a court case.

Speaking up is good. Whistleblowing is necessary.
