EP 1053 I offer one basic reason and two scenarios for why someone should hire a career coach.

"Why Do People Hire Career Coaches?"

The 1st answer I'm going to say may sound flip to some of you and self-serving to others, but is factually correct. The answer is, "because they are smart."

They know they need help. They haven't been able to figure it out for themselves so they do the smart thing. They are getting advice. They are getting help from someone who knows better than they how to get the result that they want. Let me illustrate. Let's start with the job search scenario and then go on to a few others.

In a job search, a person has been hitting their head against the wall. They're not getting the results they want. They had been talking to friends, family, former managers, anyone that they know who know little more than day in order to get advice.  Doesn't it make sense to ask someone who has far more experience than they in helping people find work to help them get results?  Of course it is.  It is smart.

Let me give you another scenario.  Someone is in a career they don't really care for. They are bored. Listless.  They are behaving weirdly with family.  Behaving this way because they are just not happy doing the work that they are doing.  They go to a career coach for help.

Career coaches have tools and experiences that will help a job hunter, help you as a professional who is struggling with what to do next. They may be able to help you get to where you want to faster.  Now you may still fumble around because it's not like I'm going to listen to you and say, "Oh!  You should be a dentist!"  It doesn't work that way.

We only learn a certain amount from each person AND we can move things along much faster than if you don't see a career coach.

Certainly in job search, certainly in other then venues, the people who you go to for advice, have little more experience than you do. What makes you think you're giving you the right information?

Better to get to a coach than fumble around.

Starting a Negotiation with Yes | JobSearchTV.com


With credit to Nick Corcodilos of “Ask the Headhunter,” here is a smart way to negotiate changes to your job offer by starting with, “Yes.”

I want to give Nick Corcodillos credit for this one. He was, "Ask The Headhunter," a newspaper column and website. He is a great suggestion for a salary negotiation.

It was prompted by a question he received from someone who lives in the Boston area and has an offer to join a firm in downtown Boston (traffic to his office would be hellish, of course). This is how he suggested the negotiation be handled.

The person wants to say yes, but the location is the problem. When you suggested someone do is to say something to the effect of, "I really want to say yes to your offer. I like the people; I like the team; I think the compensation is fine." Notice he is not saying, "I am accepting the offer." What he is saying is, "I really want to say yes to your offer."

"I would like to enter into discussion with you about 1 or 2 of the terms of the offer before coming on board." Notice that he hasn't said yes, yet and that he wants to discuss 1 or 2 of the terms of the offer. You praise the team, the money, the people and now you want to talk about 1 or 2 of the terms of the offer. In this case, the job would move to a work at home situation or a work from home 3 days a week/work at the office 2 days a week situation. No, nothing is guaranteed by firms are used to dealing with "take it or leave it situations" with what someone I know refers to as "sheeples." You know, people who act like sheep.

Rather than act like a sheep, you really know what you want and what you need. What you're doing is buttering them up by saying yes to a variety of things ("I really would like to say yes to your offer), and then saying that you want to enter into a discussion with them about 1 or 2 of the conditions if they would be amenable to it. What you're saying is that you need to negotiate some things.

Again, it doesn't mean that you are going to get them BUT you are starting off with a "yes." Nick believes that this type of butter up scenarios helps and in many of his negotiations.

How Do I Reach Out to a Recruiter Who Reached Out to Me A Year Ago? | JobSearchTV.com


A recruiter reached out to me a year ago about a position but I wasn’t interested. Now, I decided to look for a job. How do I reach out to them? Is there any etiquette about doing that?

I received a question from someone that I thought was interesting.The question is, "How can I reach out to a recruiter who contacted me a year ago? Is there an etiquette to keep in mind?"

Hopefully you kept etiquette in mind when you rebuffed the outreach from them. Hopefully you weren't rude, obnoxious, or cause them to question their sanity and ever reaching out to you. Believe it or not, some people act like jerks. That's true of recruiters, obviously, but job hunters do it in spades to say the least.

if you are courteous when they reached out to you and said something along the lines of, "Thank you for reaching out. That wasn't my time to consider other things. It now is." The more drawn out way to do it that I think would work best is, "A year ago you reached out to me about a search that you were doing. I wasn't ready to make a change. Now I am. I would like to schedule time with you. Would you like to see my resume 1st?"

With an executive search firm, with the retained search recruiters, unless they have a position open for what your background would be a fit, you probably won't hear from them.. With a contingency recruiting firm, that's usually the case, as well, but you may get a phone call from them just to clarify your background now. Regardless, there is no harm to reaching out as long as you're well mannered and present yourself decently.
