“Progress has never been a bargain. You have to pay for it.
Sometimes I think there’s a man who sits behind a counter and says, “All right, you can have a telephone but you lose privacy and the charm of distance.
Madam, you may vote but at a price. You lose the right to retreat behind the powder puff or your petticoat.
Mister, you may conquer the air but the birds will lose their wonder and the clouds will smell of gasoline.”
~”Inherit the Wind”
The movie, “Inherit the Wind,” was a movie that almost caused me to be a lawyer. It all stems from this quote.
“Progress has never been a bargain. You have to pay for it.”
There is a price that we pay with every choice we make. A night where we would rather be on Facebook or watch Netflix is a choice to not spend with our children or improving ourselves.
A day where we do our job as though it is an annoyance or bad habit helps breed an infection in our spirit that can be as damaging as one where we get a fever.
When we don’t care, we rarely make progress. When we put in effort, even when an employer doesn’t know it or appreciate it, we get better because our soul is involved.
Progress may never be a bargain, but devaluing our lives cheapens us . . . and we made that choice. No one else.
