Most people have the wrong idea about what reference checks are really all about.

Don’t Include References on Your Resume

Most companies do reference checks, but not how you think they do them. They’re not really trying to verify your competence. Your interviews and work samples really do that for them. They’re really looking for red flags.
And the questions they ask references, yeah, they may throw out the smokescreen question of how this person doing their job or were they any good at their job. The real thing they’re trying to find out is would you hire them again and what should their next manager know about working with them effectively.
